Frequently asked questions

Are these classes suitable for me?

While Yoga is for everybody, group classes obviously have their limitations. A basic pre-requisite for attending one of my group classes is that you can get up and down from the floor unaided. You should ideally also be able to lie on the floor and sit close to the floor in some way (using props -blankets/ blocks/ cushions - for comfort if necessary). If any of this sounds like it might be a struggle for you I’d be happy to work with you on a one-to-one basis or alternatively I can recommend a chair yoga class.

I'm not flexible.  Can I still do Yoga?

Yes! All the postures and movements can be adapted to fit your body. Regular Yoga practice will lead to increased flexibility and mobility but it is a by-product of the practice rather than a goal in its own right.

What shall I wear?

Soft, comfy clothing that you can move in easily.  Tracksuit bottoms or leggings and a t-shirt or vest top are ideal.  It’s best not to wear anything too baggy.  We practise in bare feet.

Can I eat or drink as normal before/after class?

Yoga should ideally be practised on an empty stomach.  Allow at least 2 hours after a small meal, and 4 hours after a heavy meal.  Hydrate well before and after class as it is best not to drink during practice.  After class you can eat and drink as normal.

Do I need any special equipment?

I have a limited supply of yoga mats so do please bring your own if you have one.  Please bring a blanket to class. All other props are provided.

Does Yoga help with back pain?

It depends on the nature of the back pain.  Many people suffer from back pain due to non-optimal postural habits, often caused by spending long hours sitting, working at a computer or looking at a phone.  On the whole, yoga can help ease this kind of discomfort by retraining the body into better habits.  However, yoga is not necessarily the best remedial treatment in the case of deeper structural issues or injuries.  In some instances, I would recommend other approaches such as clinical somatics, physiotherapy or osteopathy as a first step before beginning Yoga classes to 'maintain' the benefits of treatment.

I have injuries/ serious health/ mobility issues.  Can I still practice Yoga?

Please get in touch so that we can discuss your individual case.
